I know it is not much of a life, but I get by. And anytime that you can use your passion to help make a living the better off you are going to be.
I have been making money as a part-time beta game tester for the past 2 years and I am almost to the point where I can go full time. It was not an easy road and there were quite a few bumps in the road when it came to learning how beta testing worked and how I needed to use my skills and knowledge to my advantage.
Here are a few tips that any new beta game tester should observe before jumping in.
You need to be absolutely serious about performing your test
This is one of the few industries where you do not need a computer science degree to get going. It might help, but it is not mandatory. You need to stick to your beta testing and ensure that you meet your testing deadlines. You reputation could be lost if you fail to meet the gaming companies expectations.
Do not expect to start making the big bucks right away
It took me 6 months to actually start generating a steady income doing my beta testing. I did think about quitting over that period, but I decided to stick with it and use that time to get myself out there for the companies to see. As time went on, more gaming companies started to come to me for their needs because I showed that I was dependable and normally meet my deadlines.
I would suggest getting the X-Box 360. 70% of my testing is done on the X-Box console so this is where a lot of the games are right now. I also have a PlayStation 3 and a Nintendo DS systems that I sometimes get request for. So having a few gaming consoles is recommended.
